Passport Free Travel Between Azerbaijan, Turkey to Begin in April

Passport free travel between Azerbaijan, Turkey to begin in April

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has mentioned that from 1st April 2021, the citizens of Azerbaijan would no longer need a passport to travel to Turkey and will only need a national identity card installed with a chip. For the first time ever Azerbaijan has signed this protocol with Turkey to use only the new generation identity card as a travel document which is a clear example of brotherhood and friendship.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu tweeted with the hashtag ‘One nation Two states’, which is also the motto of Turkey-Azerbaijan, explaining the deep-rooted relationship between Turkey and Azerbaijan. He also tweeted that as of that day traveling to Azerbaijan was then possible only with an identity card. All obstacles were removed and that their brotherhood was getting stronger.

The ‘entry-exit form’ which would be handed to Azerbaijan citizens entering Turkey and Turkish citizens exiting Turkey is bilingual making it accessible for both citizens. By showing this form to the officers at the border along with the national ID card, citizens of both countries can travel to the other country. Covid-19 test results are surely required as a coronavirus defense procedure.

The protocol was approved in mid-February of 2020 by the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and signed on the 10th of December 2020 in Baku by the governments of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Turkey is the first country to let Azerbaijan citizens travel to Turkey without a passport and only with an identity card.
The citizens of both countries will be able to visit each other and travel to other third-world countries without a Turkish e Visa, biometric identity cards, and civil passports. Only to extend the stay would require a passport. Citizens from third countries will be required to have a passport to enter Azerbaijan and Turkey. As a sign of strategic partnership, this treaty is on the practice which also says that the stay limit of both the countries has been extended to 90 days from 30 days without a visa. And any stay over 90 days will require a passport valid for 60 days longer than the required period, along with a residential permit.
